Greenways Types

Although greenways take many forms and perform different functions, there are three major categories:

  • Greenways that support human activity;
  • Greenways that support ecological or conservation proposes; or
  • Greenways that support a combination of both.

PA Greenway Examples

The Statewide Greenways Network includes all types of greenways. When planning regional greenway networks, consider opportunities for greenways that serve as recreation and transportation corridors and for greenways that can support natural resource conservation. Greenways make connections in both human-made and natural systems. Pennsylvania has successful greenways of many types that can serve as examples for greenway planners.
