New Center To Promote Tourism Along Schuylkill Greenway Corridor

Description:
This month the first of five planned visitors centers located along the Schuylkill Greenway Corridor has opened in Mahanoy City, Schuylkill County. Kurt Zwikl, president of the Schuylkill River Greenway, a Pottstown-based nonprofit that promotes and manages the corridor, views these sites as “gateway centers” for tourists interested in accessing the greenway corridor that extends from Schuylkill County through Berks, Montgomery, Chester and Philadelphia counties.

Other centers are planned for Reading, Pottstown, Phoenixville, and Valley Forge. The Schuylkill River Greenway Association is providing partial funding for the centers, in conjunction with local partners. Part of the Greenway's mission is to help revitalize communities along the Schuylkill River, something the group had in mind nearly two years ago when it purchased a former PECO Energy building near the river in Pottstown for its new headquarters.

The Mahanoy City center, to be managed by the Area Revitalization and Development Corporation and staffed by volunteers, will be a boon to tourism in that area. The site for the center is a former department store.
